From a son of white supremacists to real-life child murderers, the young men in four out of five of this year's films plunge into a darkness where adults fear not tread.
Grim dramas dominate in a generally strong program.
This year's Oscar-nominated shorts carry plenty of emotional weight in their compact running times with stories that span life's breadth.
Four of the titles in question feature a child in some kind of horrific danger - whether it involves kidnapping, murder, accidental death or racial violence.
What awful childhood traumas are gnawing at the members of the Academy's short films and feature animation branch?
The future may look grim in these four shorts, but at least the next generation will have some great actors. All of the children in these shorts are excellent.
My pick: Vincent Lambe's controversial and profoundly harrowing 'Detainment,' a dramatization of the real-life police interrogations of the 10-year-old boys who killed a toddler in England in 1993.
In a slate of assured, thought-provoking works, Detainment stands apart as exceptionally powerful and appropriately unsettling.
In the wake of the president's State of the Union address, I thought it opportune to deliver my State of the Oscar Shorts for 2019. And, sad to report, they are anything but strong.
I don't know if this is the worst batch the Academy has ever managed to compile for consideration, but it's a pretty bad bunch. Some of the films are downright insulting.
One of the shorts, 'Detainment,' is a profound, sobering drama featuring remarkable performances from its two young leads.
They represent the best in class from around the world and are selected on the basis of merit, but there are some uncannily unifying themes in evidence.
