Simon T @Bucksplit 3d At first, if you're a film nut, this is very obviously a love letter to the vanishing repertory cinemas. Their idiosyncratic double and triple bills of neglected schlock and classic grindhouse. The New Beverly in Hollywood is one such, and its current director has assembled a crowd of fellow enthusiasts and regulars to talk (at great length) about their love for this old palace. The problem only emerges later, when it becomes a rather sentimental and misguided hymn to the dying format of 35mm film projection over digital. Ironic too that one of their surprise guests is David Lynch, a famous advocate for digital. See more 06/12/2018 Didn't really add anything. See more 01/11/2017 Documentary of revival Cinema around the New Beverly Theater. Most of its appeal is seeing a group of people that are enthusiastic about 35mm film. They made a really good point that movies are not preserved like art is. The Mona Lisa is guarded in a museum and original prints of movies are destroyed since they are expensive to store. Just like vinyl records have made a come back I hope these types of theaters do too. The cool retro feel of the Beverly is the perfect stage for hip film lovers to gush fondly over classic double bills, and surprise Q and A sessions with big wig Hollywood types.
