Critics Consensus

Ben Wheatley's Rebecca remake is ravishing to behold, but it never quite gets to the heart of the classic source material -- or truly justifies its own existence.

If Wheatley and his team had found a way to inject some of that delicious moral ambivalence into the veins of the film, Rebecca might be more worthwhile. Go to Full Review

This is a melodramatic tale of class disparity and imposter syndrome and compulsive jealousy and explosive fury, and the execution here is just ... tepid. Lukewarm. Go to Full Review

Overall, it's a highly polished and consistently enjoyable watch that feels a little hemmed in by convention. Go to Full Review

While this Rebecca may not wholly live up to the reputations of its predecessors, there’s much to love in its director’s take on a thrilling, engaging slice of seaside suspense. Go to Full Review

Katie L @Katie282 2h I loved this film! I was shocked to see the negative scores. I havent read the book and dont remember much about the original film, so I didnt have any prejudice about what the film "should be". In contrast to negative reviews, I really liked that the film wasnt overwrought or melodramatic. Staying slightly understated gave it a simmering suspense that I thought was very well done. I'm glad I didnt read the reviews first or I would have missed out on a very good film. See more Sally C @Sally1968 Mar 10 If you haven’t read the book, this movie would be OK. If you have read the book you’ll be questioning why they took a perfectly good story and changed just about everything in it. They’re also missing the most important character in the book—Mandalay. Du Maurier took great pains describing the house and the grounds and how the second wife was experiencing it. By the time you’re done reading the book, Mandalay is a living, breathing entity. This movie doesn’t capture that at all, nor the inexplicable grief Maxim would’ve had when he saw its destruction. See more Alec B @AlecMichaelB Nov 19 The 2020 Rebecca is a glossy, modern retelling that swaps Hitchcock’s simmering dread for lush visuals and melodramatic polish. Lily James brings earnest warmth to the new Mrs. de Winter, while Armie Hammer delivers a Max de Winter who feels more conflicted than commanding. Though it never fully escapes the shadow of its predecessor, the film offers a stylish, accessible entry point into the story—part romance, part mystery, and part Instagram-ready gothic fantasy.
