A Cure for Wellness

Critics Consensus

A Cure for Wellness boasts a surfeit of visual style, but it's wasted on a derivative and predictable story whose twists, turns, and frights have all been more effectively dealt before.

Critic Reviews for A Cure for Wellness

  • The problems lie in an excessively lengthy runtime resulting in repetition of scares before an utterly bizarre finale.

  • Verbinski's gothic psychological thriller is absorbing. It unfolds in a maze even Theseus would not escape. It will keep you guessing until the almost unbelievable ending.

  • If Verbinski had brought pace, the film might have worked, but he takes an eternity, then throws it all to the winds with a finale that's remarkable silly, even in this fanciful neck of the woods.

  • An absurdly over-long run time allows the film to keep on answering questions that we never asked.

  • All the style and slithering horror is not enough to glue together a plot that favours atmosphere over coherence and overstays its welcome by at least 30 minutes.

  • [The] poor ending felt like a betrayal, since it wrenches A Cure for Wellness fully out of its original genre and into melodrama.

A Cure for Wellness is most certainly not going to be for everyone. It's spectacularly, deliberately, uncomfortably ugly (albeit, in a bizarrely beautiful way). It's story is flawed, it's long (two and a half hours all told), it's slow, some of its setups don't evolve into payoffs, it's not half as mysterious or clever as it might think it is, and it can't even hold to its own mythology 100%. But I loved it.

Sure its often predictable and overlong but I found myself getting caught up in the pure deranged lunacy of it all. Verbinski can't tell a coherent story but his visual style always offers up something unique. Let's keep giving him millions of dollars to make movies everybody hates.

The incredible design and camera work is not enough to overcome a simplistic plot. I will compare this to Tim Burton who has demonstrated a gift for the odd but at the expense of the storyline. I liked certain parts of the film but it felt too commercial to be successful, the budget needed to be lower and the weirdness dialled up to 11. The film flopped and it's fairly obvious why a mid budget film would flop when it is this bizarre. The film needed to be in the 20 million, I can't see where the budget went and that is the problem. In an era where Blumhouse is punching out quality films below 10 million, you need to aim for a similar bar. The director had a great eye for Pirates and The Ring but he hasn't set the world on fire and I feel he needs to reinvent the wheel, no point coasting and that's how I felt for most of the movie. There was a waiting and when it was finally revealed, you just shrug and wonder why you just watched a movie past 2 hours without any redeeming twists or set pieces. This was a giant miss and while it's not terrible, it is no where near being good. 13-06-2017.
