Movie Info

Fourteen years ago, Rachel suffered a stroke just a day after she and her new boyfriend Chris had told their parents she was having a baby. Rachel is now a quadriplegic, which means she cannot walk, speak, or move her arms. Her husband Chris is the self-appointed family man who never leaves her side. His sheep farm has seen better days, so Chris has come up with a creative solution for their financial troubles: he is going to open a brothel. In A Good Man, Indian-Australian filmmaker Safina Uberoi follows Chris's family and friends during the renovations and the opening of the brothel. She sketches a touching and surprising portrait of this family, who manage to take care of the helpless Rachel with a lot of humor and the ability to put things in perspective, while the prostitutes are taking up residence in the new business. Chris's tenderness stands in sharp contrast to his plans of becoming a sex industry entrepreneur. Is he making the right move? And what about Rachel, who spends each night in a little room behind the brothel's reception desk because she cannot stay home alone? What does she think about all of this? -- (C) Official Site

Through it all, you can see what makes [Jones] such an effective artist in a collaborative medium: the ability to enlarge his diva moments into a communal experience.

It's an interesting story, but the presentation is more like a home movie than something you'd pay to see in a theater. Wait for it to pop up on cable TV.

Ms. Uberoi's straight-shooting style is a perfect match for her salt-of-the-earth subject, a hard-working husband and father with more on his plate than most.

A Good Man has devastating moments, but its good intentions ultimately shortchange Chris and Rachel, diminishing, not to mention patronizing, them.
