Unfortunately, it starts off like you're getting a sequel to Prometheus.

Yet again a crew sniffs after a mysterious ping and sticks their nose in a deadly larva pod. Are our astronauts learning? God no. And if the audience expected a different plot, we're not learning, either.

As redesigns go, Alien: Covenant is not ambitious, but it's roaringly, repulsively effective.

This may not be a movie that reinvents the wheel. But it's one that knows how to make it roll.

It's an Alien movie for our times, one in which mankind isn't just under the thumb of an oppressive corporation but sowing the seeds of its own destruction on a more sweeping scale.

Other than [Michael] Fassbender's two androids, there are no memorable characters and as for the mythology of the series, it simply muddies the waters further.

A bit too familiar to either thrill or surprise, despite some nasty little twists. These are scenarios more compellingly explored, and with more iconic characters, in previous chapters.

Consistently stunning from a visual standpoint. Even at 80 years old, Scott can still run circles around much younger directors when it comes to visceral action scenes and rich imagery.

The most beautiful sequences in the film are those which allow Scott to observe the world around him in its grandeur, focused more on thoughtful exploration than exposition.

Covenant takes John Milton into a future of cybernetics, where the synthetic human (an excellent dual performance by Michael Fassbender) takes on a Satanic role.

Ridley Scott is still a masterful filmmaker [but] which Ridley Scott do you want and which side of the Alien franchise are you looking for?

The familiarity of the setup works against the movie, because we know what's lurking in that suspicious-looking egg and it takes forever to pass each franchise touchstone.

In the cold light of day, there's not much to Covenant. Its plot throws standard slasher mechanics against grand existential musings in a haphazard manner...But as Scott knows all too well, films aren't watched in daylight...

Prometheus and Alien: Covenant are like a Star Trek universe composed of nothing but red shirts.

While Covenant has its flaws, it seems to be a worthwhile step forward, albeit one that perhaps doesn't travel as far as one might hope.

Unlike Prometheus, which I found I enjoyed a lot more than the general consensus, this was as bad if not worse than its reputation. Let's just leave Alien alone for a while...
