02/20/2019 One of the better documentaries I've seen this year. It's part of the PBS American Experience series and runs at only 54 minutes in length. It recounts the fascinating little known true story of the brilliant inventor, scientist, and businessman Alfred Loomis, who built a huge lab facility on his newly acquired mansion in Tuxedo Park, N.Y., named Tudor House. Loomis. along with other top notch scientists, went on to discover a number of very important innovations, such as the foundation for what would become ultrasound techniques. Probably his most important work was finding a way to put shortwave radar into military use, so vital to the countering of the Nazi war machine during WW II. The movie, directed by Rob Rapley and narrated by Campbell Scott, also illustrated Loomis' difficult personal life, from his upbringing to his lack of emotional support for his own family, including committing a heinous act against his wife Ellen. Overall, this PBS doc zips right along and, as mentioned, brings to light a most important but little known true story. See more Read all reviews
