What to Know

Critics Consensus

Benefitting from astonishing Australian locations and Charlize Theron's raw athleticism while skimping on the finer details, Apex doesn't mark the zenith of survival thrillers but makes for a solid entry.

A fun watch, but it's hard to imagine people returning for a second viewing. It’s an efficient, effective horror movie about the limits of the human body. But it’s almost entirely experiential and in-the-moment, with no deeper levels to unpack or explore. Go to Full Review

Charlize Theron gives everything she’s got to a survival thriller right out of the cliché spin cycle, but there’s no contest when she pits herself against a raging Mother Nature and Taron Egerton’s psycho cannibal killer. They never had a chance. Go to Full Review

It is thrillingly made -- lean and mean. Go to Full Review

The last act contains some of the film’s biggest surprises and departures from expectation, which makes Apex, if not exactly original, at least a particularly potent assemblage of familiar pieces. Go to Full Review

Even though it follows a familiar formula, "Apex" is an unpretentious, bare-bones affair that wisely focuses on Theron’s physical performance and the mercilessness of the beautiful but unforgiving landscape. Go to Full Review

What truly holds the entire piece together, though, is the sheer physicality of Charlize Theron, whose absolute commitment to performing her own insane stunts is nothing short of awe-inspiring. Go to Full Review

Vinicius M @Vini_Monteiro 2d Apex is a frustrating mix of intense adrenaline and lazy writing. It starts strong, promising a deep psychological journey fueled by grief, but quickly abandons it for a cliché-ridden survival plot in Australia. Charlize Theron’s phenomenal, physically exhausting performance carries the movie, compensating for a lifeless supporting cast and Eric Bana’s wasted cameo. Taron Egerton is chilling at first but soon devolves into a cartoonish caricature that ruins the gritty tone. While the hostile environment and brilliant sound design build great tension, the film's execution falters. Terrible CGI, incoherent shaky-cam action, and a script that lets the villain defy physics completely destroy the suspense. Coupled with dragging pacing and an anticlimactic ending, it’s a fractured thriller that only works if you turn off your brain for some mindless, straightforward entertainment. See more Xine F @XineFury 3d Not bad. Decent amounts of tension. Good villain, lots of scary moments. But it didn't leave much of an impression on me. See more Thomas S @RT32124688 3d Generic af. Whatever film she is in, I will watch because I know she commits to her characters 1000% (not to mention her own choreography and stunts). Even Taron Edgerton. Still, the two of their characters, as treacherous and as tough as the Australian outback that they find themselves in, cannot hold the film together long enough for it to feel like falling over the edge. I was engaged 2 quarters of the way …then it became more of a character study and I wasn’t watching because I felt engrossed by it. I was watching to see how and when it’ll end. See more Mike T @WeAreTheMovieGuys Jun 24 "Apex" is a very strange film to critique. It is very much a by the numbers thriller that we have seen done many times before. The cinematography and filming style is very well done. Taron Egerton puts in a damn good performance & is completely unhinged. He definitely embraces the crazy & looks like he is having a ball with this role. He steals the film from Charlize. It does some things well here and there throughout but I felt the ending was very anti climatic. No big show down with excitement and everything just kind of ends rather abruptly. All in all, it's a decent watch but I walked away from it with not much to say after it was over. It's nothing that's going to blow your socks off. See more Read all reviews
