Amused by exploiting our instinct to believe what we see and hear, Duke (Aaron Holliday) treats deepfakes like a contagious party trick. Not because he has something to prove, but simply because he can. Soon blood starts to spill, but Duke isn't the one who has to clean it up. Intersecting storylines catch the fallout of Duke's petty pastime: Poppy (Simran Jehani), heading into the desert for a weekend of cosplay and foreplay; Clinto Binto (Sean Gunn), a legend in the scene with a reputation too expensive to fake; and Lazzy (Paige Searcy), a stranger who picks the wrong line, the wrong coffee shop, and the wrong day to argue. Paranoia. Confirmation bias. Baseless certainty. We're all APPOFENIACS. When anyone's version of the truth can be created with the tap of a finger, the horror isn't the lie. It's what happens when people believe it.

Built for anyone who misses the grunge, the fast dialogue, and the moral ambiguity of 1990s indie cinema. ... An easy recommendation if you want a thriller that handles nostalgia without losing its edge. Go to Full Review

... a brutally pessimistic perspective on the rise of technology that’s chilling because of its terrible accuracy. Go to Full Review

Darkly satirical, things get out of hand in a rush as there is no escape for anyone from technology for its anxiety-inducing 90 minute runtime. Go to Full Review

There's very little new to say so far as warnings about A.I. and deepfakes are concerned, but Appofeniacs isn't too worried about saying anything new so far as it's highlighting an ongoing problem with the technology in spectacular fashion. Go to Full Review

Appofeniacs takes a genuine concern of modern technology and amplifies it to horrifying results. I wish the segregated storylines had more of an impactful through line by the end, but the insanity and carnage made for some sick entertainment. Go to Full Review

Appofeniacs does have some issues with its overall narrative and the structure therein, with not every puzzle piece coming together, but the movie's core commentary on AI and how it's being used is worth seeing and discussing. Go to Full Review

Kenneth P 20 hrs ago I wanted to like this movie, but it was all over the place. Characters were introduced, who seemed important to the plot, but were quickly forgotten. Story beats introduced, but also quickly forgotten. Maybe that was the point? I couldn't tell. This is a great movie to play in the background while you're doing something else See more Eric G 23 hrs ago Delightfully bonkers, unsettling, imaginative chaos at its best! See more Julie Oliver-Touchstone 23 hrs ago I thought I knew what to expect, but I didn’t. Hard to believe this wasn’t written from news clips in the past two weeks. Uncanny insights into the worst case scenario…. The characters were well.., you’ll see. Definitely stayed true to the title. See more Matt W @Lakerlver022 1 day ago This film is both wildly outlandish and frighteningly realistic. A very unique style, can’t really recall another movie like this. Would be 5 stars but feels a bit too scattered in terms of the real story it’s trying to tell. See more Frederick J @RT05208896 1 day ago Saw Appofeniacs on opening night at Vista Theater in Hollywood and had the opportunity to join the Q&A with director Chris and the cast. When the movie ended, my first reaction was literally: "Bro, WTF?!" I was on the edge of my seat throughout the entire film...tense, curious, and constantly wondering what was really happening and what was coming next. The story unfolds in a way that keeps you guessing, while the pieces gradually come together as the movie progresses. By the end, you realize how much was being set up along the way. I already want to watch it again to catch all the details I missed. Chris’s storytelling feels uniquely his own, but if I had to compare it, I’d say it has some of Quentin Tarantino’s unexpected storytelling mixed with M. Night Shyamalan’s suspense and mystery. What makes it even more chilling is how the themes around technology and society feel surprisingly plausible. A horror thriller that entertains, surprises, and leaves you thinking long after it ends.
