Critic Reviews for Ashes in the Snow

  • Filmmakers never seem to run out of footnotes to history during World War II. This one is better served in the pages of a novel. It doesn't work on film.

  • The script and direction ... [are] dealing with actual historical atrocities and tragedies, and distilling them into another resilience-of-the-human-spirit bromide.

  • Markevicius and Jones find meaning in the small moments of humanity within the horrors of war - those times when the oppressed and even the oppressors get a chance, just for a little while, to be people.

  • Sometimes only a fine line separates tragic sweep from a movie that never comes to life as anything other than actors dressed in costumes, straining to inhabit an alien chapter of history.

  • The film is heartfelt and often powerful but sometimes too sluggish to carry maximum impact.

  • ... can't decide whether it wants to be a character study about a young artist or a more comprehensive examination of wartime genocide. It's not especially convincing either way.

Audience Reviews for Ashes in the Snow

Did the Soviets crackdown on surrounding nations during the late 1940's? I kinda knew, but not really. And so this film introduces that perspective to ignorants such as myself. But the manner of intro has been done, and better, many times before: the activist in the family scaring the rest with their defiance of authority, the roundup by unfriendly soldiers, the journey by boxcar in inhuman conditions, etc., etc., etc. While not badly told, this is only a lesser effort, although the side story of the war's effects on soldiers is well displayed.
