It's frustrating to watch a director take on so many ideas, but pursue none of them with clarity.
[A] formally impressive but thematically slippery directorial debut.
Its many scenes of decadence are portrayed with all the polish and deliberateness of an Urban Outfitters ad.
Striking in its candour... it takes confidence to bring such a self-assured package together.
A surprisingly affecting debut, less concerned with teenage debauchery than the world of disarray in which its characters move. It's also one that's strongly attuned to the bonds between women.
I get documenting the blase mentality of some teens, but the trumped up apathy just renders the whole thing dull and mostly pointless.
What Axolotl Overkill fails to understand is that the apathy powering its numbly beating heart is actually no longer relevant.
If "Axolotl Overkill" is style over substance, fine, but oh boy, that kinetic style.
Everything comes together beautifully to craft a whirlwind portrait that's mischievous, smart, and substantial.
It's a stylish debut from an artist with a keen sense of visuals, music, and feeling - a finger firmly on the pulse of now.
Chaotic lives can make for a muddled storyline, yet ultimately Hegemann allows her central character some kind of growth.
