Critic Reviews for The Take (Bastille Day)
The Take is one busy, busy action flick. It also does something I never thought could be done: It makes the consistently charismatic Idris Elba look unappealing.
Elba's magnetic physical presence delivers so much without doing much of anything. But his fans deserve so much better than a couple of dumb quips and a little ultra-violence.
Most of The Take's moving parts feel like spinning cogs, devoid of fit or function.
Yes, it's uncomfortable watching a terror-themed tale in a city that so recently dealt with real terrorism. But if you can get past that, the movie sweeps you along with a brisk pace and even dashes of humor.
A strictly by-the-numbers political thriller that fails to capitalize on Idris Elba's formidable screen presence.
Audience Reviews for The Take (Bastille Day)
Great casting and the film is quite good for a while but the opposites angle of the lead actors wasn't ideal. I had wished they actually pushed the tone for a more gritty action aimed one. The pickpocket and anti terrorist team up just never translated and found the actors sparring without any comedy. This should have been aimed like Taken instead of the pedestrian film we are provided.
This is the film that is noticeable only for showing the potential of Idris Elba as a big-time action star. Unfortunately the script and everything else is as predictable as they come but, if any film can convince us to use Elba for the next James Bond then this is it.
Featuring the badass that is Idris Elba, Bastille Day is about...well there's a bomb and...lots of corrupt police officers and...a pickpocket? I'm usually good at following films, but this plot was just instantly forgettable! The script was awful and the film was just boring. Elba is great and needs to be in more action films, however Kelly Reilly (supremely underrated) is wasted in this film! This should've been so much better then what it was, the script was such a let down. Elba does however have one of his songs featured in the credits, evidently a talented guy.
