The Lifetime Beaches is a reduction of the original - smaller emotions, smaller performances, fewer songs, shorter running time (about 87 minutes versus 123) - and while that could have been an improvement, it's not.
You may be moved by Menzel's characteristically volcanic rendition of "Wind Beneath My Wings." More likely, you'll just cry from boredom.
Menzel's singing... does provide compensation for wading through the melodrama, although frankly, DVR-ing and zapping to those parts would be the more time-effective option.
Ultimately, the remake will still hit those who are suckers for a good cry. When Tony-winner Mendel belts out the classic "Wind Beneath My Wings" and "The Glory of Love," even disappointed fans will be reaching for a Kleenex.
It's like a CliffsNotes of a CliffsNotes of a melodrama. It's not so much that Menzel and Long are bad - they're consistently OK, if never better than that - but the story is too hollow for them to dig in.
Lifetime's re-do of Beaches provides a suitably weepy, sometimes sappy, overall entertaining escape.
A freeze-dried remake that'll leave you wistful for the fresh taste of the original.
Menzel has a spectacular voice. But ... she's not Bette Midler. And Beaches without Midler is just not the same thing. It's just not as good.
Their friendship felt so real.
