Birds of Prey sets the bar for nuanced depictions of female comic-book characters on the big screen...

What Yan and Hodson accomplish with Birds of Prey is the balance that's sometimes lacking in comic book films: They fulfill both the demands of the story and the demands of the characters.

Robbie is the No. 1 Australian movie star right now. I would watch her in anything...

Under the film's hyper-formatted style and impersonal action, there's a pretty good movie straining to break out-which makes the waste of its creators' earnest exertions all the more dismaying.

[Margot Robbie] herself is fantastic. The action choreography is pretty good... If I have a quibble: it has probably the worst needle drops of any movie in recent history.

Does the positive energy of a female-centric comic book movie-made by women-compensate for the nihilistic, super-violent nature of its content? Is this really a step forward for women, behind the camera and in the audience? That's the conundrum presented

Sep 14, 2020DC continues their trainwreck of a film universe with Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). When Harley Quinn's enemies come looking to settle the score with her after she's dumped by the Joker, she makes a deal with a crime lord named Roman Sionis to retrieve a stolen diamond in order to square things; meanwhile a club singer named Dinah Lance teams up with a rogue cop to protect a young pickpocket who stole the diamond. Starring Margot Robbie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Rosie Perez, and Ewan McGregor, the cast isn't too bad, but it's not all that impressive either. And the plot is all kinds of convoluted and puts its girl power/emancipation theme ahead of good storytelling. Still, the action scenes are fun and exciting, and the soundtrack brings a lot of energy to the film. An entertaining mess, Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is yet another mediocre effort by DC.Dann M Super Reviewer

May 19, 2020If COVID-19 ushered cinemas off this mortal coil, I'm kind of strangely okay with telling people this was the last thing I ever got to see on the big screen.Gimly M Super Reviewer

Mar 24, 2020Birds of Prey is a good example at what DC are doing correct. This is not the average comic book movie and it's refreshing to see. The cast is enjoyable and Robbie is ideal again in the central role of Harley Quinn. DC are managing to give the villain a chance to shine, and McGregor manages to breath life into Black Mask. I wasn't a massive fan of the change over and mask for Black Mask, it was actually better when McGregor had the mask off. The film is not perfect, but the gritty tone was ideal for the film and I hope DC can continue with this style of storytelling with the next films in the series. 22/03/2020Brendan N Super Reviewer
