A talented cast is wasted on a bland attempt at a suspenseful, serial killer flick.

Movie Info

Filmed on location in Montreal and New York, The Bone Collector is a suspense thriller that combines Rear Window and Seven. Two cops on the trail of a brutal serial killer must see as one, act as one, and think as one before the next victim falls. Lincoln Rhyme (Denzel Washington) is an intelligent forensics detective who was paralyzed in the line of duty. The author of several books, he has a keen eye for detail and nose for clues that have made him a legend in the law enforcement community. Amelia Donaghy (Angelina Jolie) is a street-smart policewoman in her twenties. On her last day as a street cop, before being transferred to a desk job, Amelia discovers a badly mutilated corpse. Rhyme is asked to investigate the case, but he declines. To him, it is an open-and-shut case not worth his time. But when he takes a close look at the evidence, he is intrigued, as the photos reveal complex messages in their details. The lunatic, who might be a taxi driver (a Scorsese allusion), amuses himself by paying homage to legendary murders in his own gruesome acts. Amelia is assigned to assist Rhyme, and she must be the eyes and ears of the quadriplegic detective. And they must capture the killer before he strikes again. Written by Jeremy Iacone and based on a book of the same title by Jeffrey Deaver, The Bone Collector was directed by the Australian thriller specialist Phillip Noyce, who directed such films as Clear and Present Danger and Dead Calm. ~ Gönül Dönmez-Colin, Rovi

Lincoln Rhyme (Denzel Washington) was an expert detective prior to an accident which left him quadriplegic. There is a serial killer on the loose and the police department turn to him. He enlists the help of Amelia Donaghy (Angelina Jolie) and the unlikely duo set out to track down the killer. The year is 1999, we are before Saw (2004) but after Seven (1995). This movie does share a lot with these two films but is not as good as either. In certain ways the story is similar to that of Silence of the Lambs as well (rookie cop, female, helped along the way but a restricted man of high intellect) but again The Bone Collector is a country mile away from being as good as Silence of the Lambs. I feel the main reason that The Bone Collector falls short of these other big names within the same genre is that it feels a lot lighter and weaker in comparison. With the story it has and the topics that are covered throughout this film The Bone Collector really should have delivered a much heavier punch than it does. There seems to be little sense of urgency or fear of impending doom. This movie does manage to bring together quite an impressive cast, you have; Denzel Washington, Angelina Jolie, Michael Rooker, Luis Guzman, Leland Orser (another link to Seven) and Ed O'Neil to name but a few. I don't feel that any of the actors were bad, they all gave decent convincing performances. If pressed I would have to say Queen Latifah presented her character the best. She never over-played the part, just subtle gestures and doing what was necessary. I think that The Bone Collector is a good example of satisfactory Thriller. It's not a bad film, it does its job, but is short of being great due to its lack of clout and shallow delivery. It lacks the wallop necessary to stir you from your set.

The Bone Collector is an intense crime thriller that gives a little too much away, but still delivers a captivating mystery. The story follows a paralyzed forensic specialist who takes on a young protege in order to solve the murders of a serial killer. The casting is especially good, and includes Denzel Washington, Angelina Jolie, Ed O'Neill, and Michael Rooker. Washington and Jolie have a particularly good chemistry that helps to draw the audience into the film. Additionally, the story is fairly well written and uses some interesting motifs for the serial killings that make them unique and interesting. There are some problems with the last act, but overall The Bone Collector is a compelling and suspenseful film.

Star vehicle cat and mouse with denzel as the old hand and angelina as the rookie learning the ropes: can they catch the killer in time? Okay thriller boosted by a competent support cast.
