Kody R @RT08837804 May 31 No wonder people think homeschoolers are weird… this gives a totally unrealistic depiction of what homeschooling is like. They make these kids seem socially inept and wild. There are some good things in the movie. But the reality is, you keep rooting for the protagonist to have this moment where you realize what a great father he is, but then you keep seeing him hurt his kids and put them in danger. You find yourself agreeing more with the "villain" in the story because the protagonist becomes more and more unrelatable as the movie progresses. See more Sheighlay L. @slasella Apr 22 Not great. Mortensen puts on an touching performance as a dad just trying his best in his own strange way. The road trip family adventure tone is charming with some beautiful landscape shots. Subtle in its emotion with a thoughtful look at parenting, societal norms, & being yourself. Yet it’s all a bit too heavy handed & quirky to fully work for me. Mortensen plays a father who has estranged his children from the world that you and I know, choosing to live in the forest and hunt game, homeschool the children, and teach them to question and analyse everything, rather than taking anything for granted. Problems begin when the mother dies, and the family has to deal with society again, while they endeavour to ensure that her final wishes are honoured. When I spend the second half of a movie with a lump in my throat, that's a sign that I've seen something worth my time. The performances from Mortenson and the children entirely engulf you in the family's plight. It's a long time since I've seen a movie that's moved me this much and I would highly recommend this to fans great drama. If you're a kid into skybeams and CG battles, it may not be your thing. THIS IS WHAT I WANT MOVIES TO BE LIKE AGAIN - YOU KNOW, TO ACTUALLY HAVE A POINT.
