Movie Info

After his family is tortured by the dreaded Spanish Inquisition, Pedro De Vargas swears his revenge. This lush epic swashbuckler chronicles his adventures and sweet vengeance after he joins conquistador Cortez on his historic voyage to the New World. The story was filmed on location in Mexico near an active volcano. Because there was the constant threat of eruptions, shooting was constantly delayed. The exceptional location cinematography and the sweeping score by composer Alfred Newman add much to the already exciting story.

  • ...suffers from many of the same problems Hollywood epics from that era faced: an interminable length hampered by poor pacing...and a certain deadening heaviness.

  • Lavish, overlong, and dull, Henry King's historical adventure stars Tyrone Power in what amounted to one of Fox's biggest-budget productions.

  • Furtando-se de analisar o aspecto moral da "conquista" do Mxico, o filme apela para o melodrama em uma tentativa frustrada de emocionar, amarrando a histria em uma concluso artificial e repleta de furos.
