A stylish, subversive thriller from suspense-maverick Kiyoshi Kurosawa (Cure, Pulse), concerning Yoshii, an ambitious, yet directionless, young factory worker from Tokyo who side hustles in the murky realm of black market reselling, cheating buyers and sellers alike. After swindling his way into loads of cash, he becomes slowly disconnected to humanity, moving out of the city, shunning his girlfriend, and hiring a devoted assistant. But after a series of mysterious, sinister incidents occur, he begins to suspect his former victims could be plotting the ultimate revenge. If I could give this boring movie zero stars, I would. This is not how scammers act. I have never seen a scammer look so miserable in movies or TV shows. And the villain—his ‘boss’—was a good man; you would never guess he’s the final boss. Also, that kid he hired—what is he, Rambo or a yakuza member? I don’t know. The people who gave this movie full stars… are they watching something else, or am I blind?

How a factory worker becomes a honey badger who don't give a ****. The writing though for the second last scene... come on really? Is anyone that stupid? I guess, if they're that financially illiterate.

As a crime thriller, Cloud has plenty of intrigue, hidden motivations and shocking violence to satisfy fans of the genre. However, writer-director Kiyoshi Kurosawa elevates the material by turning it into a puzzle that ultimately reveals a bleak message about the universal nature of criminality. A brilliant film. Highly recommended. detroitcineaste
