Movie Info

For the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings, this documentary breaks a world scoop about the deception that fooled Hitler. In a tale of double agents and decoys, the investigation reveals, for the first time, the identity of the most secret of them all: King George VI. Drawing on new evidence and historical detective work, the programme uncovers an elaborate ruse - that also included the queen, and the future Queen Elizabeth II - to divert German attention away from the imminent Normandy landings on 6 June 1944. The programme shows the journey that the monarchy went on from being marred by Edward VIII's reputation as a Nazi sympathiser, to winning back the trust of Britain's spooks. And an added twist to the tale reveals how one of the greatest secrets of World War II was lost while in the king's possession, until the Queen Mother saved the day.

  • Much is made of comparatively little here, but to make up for that there's fascinating wartime footage and the involvement of those guaranteed interest-piquers, double agents Garbo and Brutus.

  • As a title for a television programme, D-Day: The King Who Fooled Hitler... scores a triple decker of searchable terms: the war, the royals and the Nazis namechecked in a clickbait cluster.
