Critic Reviews for Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan

  • By turns viscerally exciting and predictably formulaic - and, quite often, both at once - "Danger Close" is an efficiently crafted and consistently involving old-school war movie propelled by matter-of-fact professionalism on both sides of the cameras.

  • Anyone interested in the complexities and controversies surrounding Australia and New Zealand's involvement in Vietnam may find "Danger Close" disappointing. But the movie actually works OK as one long fight scene.

  • Stenders and cinematographer Ben Nott stage the battle scenes with impressive hyper-realism, and editor Veronika Jenet's work is, once again, outstanding. Made on location in Queensland, the film feels thoroughly authentic.

  • If it's not the most character-driven of Australian war movies, it's certainly one of the most intense.

  • Orchestrated on an impressive scale, the movie nonetheless feels both familiar and diffuse, with thinly sketched variations on a bronzed theme rather than characters...

  • That lingering whiff of unquestioning patriotism is an ugly scratch on its shiny livery but for relentless, meat-and-potatoes action you could do a whole lot worse.

Audience Reviews for Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan

Danger Close is not a bad film and finally provides a reasonable budget for an Australian war film. Kokoda had the atmosphere but struggled with its light budget. The issue with Danger Close is the made for television filmmaking style and it lacks that independent director style. I'll unfairly compare it to something like Platoon and Full Metal Jacket, but the filmmakers created something unique. This tends to be my issue with Australian films with substantial budgets. This needed to be unique and a filmmaker with a distinct style to try and break the mould of generic storytelling. This is a simple and easily accessible without anything to separate it from the standard Hollywood war films. Kriv Stenders probably wasn't the ideal choice for this film. 13/06/2020

I don't at all dislike War films, but they're also not of a genre that is particularly close to my heart. Danger Close didn't do anything for me that changed that, but, if you're a fan, and are interested in the ever-elusive "Anything other than the Yanks in WWII/Vietnam or the Brits in WWI/WWII", you could do a lot worse than give Danger Close a chance, but if you're looking for strong characterisation, you could do better too.
