It seemed like the writers and actors studied popular horror movies and just (albeit poorly) mimicked what they saw. The whole scene where the younger brother is found with marks on his neck and the ensuing fight between the older siblings appears as if lifted from The Shining. And the psychic's discussion with the sister is almost a parody of Chris McNeil's first meeting with Father Damien in The Exorcist.
