After nine years, I finally got my own copy of this drama directed by Pjer Zalica which was Bosnia and Herzegovina's submission to the 77th Academy Awards for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. After watching it I can understand why was not accepted as a nominee - the cultural difference is so huge that I would not expect understanding of the American audience of things going on in this typically Balkan spirited movie. Emotionally layered story of ordinary people in Bosnia and Herzegovina moving on with their lives following the civil war was written by Namik Kabil .
The story starts with Fuke (Senad Basic) paying a short visit to his aunt Sabira (Semka Sokolovic-Bertok) and uncle Idriz (Mustafa Nadarevic) to fix their water boiler but is forced to spend the night when his car breaks down. After so many years, instead of being confronted with an appliance in disrepair he has to confront the silence and suffering of people broken by the losses they suffered in the war which still counts the victims.
Some of the most experienced Balkan actors are appearing in this movie, and I was really enjoying the realistic acting on a very well developed script. The director showed a real mastership leading the events smoothly until the end without losing any control. In 94 minutes I had an opportunity to peek into the lives of a closely knit community, their tragedies and their happiness during one day... and I loved what I saw - people with a soul and love imbedded in them, ready to share it with everyone around them!
Recommended to everyone who understands the culture of the Balkan.
