m w @Mykwalsh91 Jan 25 The acting was superb, the shots were held close up to make everything feel off, or extremely personal when the character herself closed everyone out. It worked incredibly well for what it was, which was not a romance. This is a woman's grieving hidden behind a romance story. It was an addicts' romance. Heavy spoilers ahead; she herself was processing an event from her prior relationship that she allowed to blow up her life. She chose to self destruct and instead of processing and healing she repeated the cycle with a second romance doomed to fail from the start. She fell into romantic love with a sullen writer and into infatuation and a trauma bond with his friend. There was no romance there just a deep need to "connect" by disconnecting and doing something she knew was wrong but exciting. Which led to the blow-out it was always going to have. A soft explosion as she set everything right and chose herself. It was removed, reserved, deeply emotional, disjointed and beautifully wrong. Unlike a lot of popular romcoms or dramadies that just feed you a story with a clear timeline and overly dramatic dialogue for effect . . . this movie feels kind of like being a fly on the wall in Daphe's life, which means the scenes and the timing of things can bounce around or seem inconsistent, but ultimately it paints a more realistic picture. Shailene Woodley does a great job of playing a very realistic, down to earth character. Also, I think the best part of this film is that it's a love story, but not in the way you might think. As simple as it is, it's about Daphne learning to love herself.
