catdogkiddo 09/14/2024 so gross so good so cat See more SkyRo P @TheMovieSearch Jun 5 Booger, the 2024 horror film, is unfortunately a prime example of how poor direction and sloppy execution can completely derail a movie. From its very first scene, the film suffers from erratic and disorienting camera work. Many of the angles feel arbitrarily chosen and the constant, almost frantic back-and-forth movements only serve to confuse and frustrate the viewer. Rather than immersing the audience in suspense or atmosphere—key elements of effective horror—the cinematography is more likely to induce a headache than any real tension. The writing fares no better. The plot, if one can call it that, is muddled and aimless. It feels like it was thrown together without a clear vision, as though the screenwriter was working under extreme fatigue or perhaps attempting to parody the genre without the self-awareness required to pull it off. The story lacks coherence, character motivation, and any sense of buildup or payoff. Scenes jump from one bizarre idea to the next, without establishing stakes or emotional investment. At times, it’s difficult to tell if the film is trying to be surreal or simply doesn’t know what it’s doing. Calling Booger a horror film feels misleading. There’s little to no actual suspense, fear, or thematic depth—just a series of chaotic scenes strung together under the pretense of genre. Instead of fear or intrigue, the film inspires mostly confusion and secondhand embarrassment. It’s frustrating when films marketed as horror lean so heavily into absurdity or incoherence that they become unintentionally comedic or simply unbearable to sit through. The acting unfortunately matches the low quality of the rest of the film. The lead actress in particular delivers a performance that feels wooden and disengaged, as though she herself is unsure why she’s there. There’s a lack of conviction in her portrayal that might suggest poor direction or a rushed production, but either way, it’s hard to connect with her character—or any character, for that matter. The performances across the board feel phoned-in, making it even harder to take the film seriously. In short, Booger is a baffling misfire from beginning to end. It’s not just a bad horror movie—it’s barely a movie at all in the traditional sense. With clumsy direction, incoherent writing, and weak performances, this film is difficult to recommend even as a “so-bad-it’s-good” experience. If you’re looking for something scary, stylish, or even just entertaining, you’d be far better off skipping this one entirely. Be warned this movie goes to some pretty grotesque places, just not in the traditional sense… so be warned. It’s incredibly sharpie and well executed, especially for a small budget, genre film. This is absolutely a film that punches well above its weight class. Highly recommend for fans of irreverent, dark comedies and disturbing horror. It is a thoughtful representation of working through grief and the delusions that can come with that, but it is ultimately neither funny nor horrific. An okay little low-budget movie. And I know every character seeming insufferable is a representation of the main character's mania, but it makes it no less enjoyable to deal with them. See more Aldis H @plever 10/23/2024 One note, slow, kind of dumb, tries to be emotional but mostly doesn't succeed, and the fact that a nasty, bleeding, infected cat bite never sees any cleaning or attention of any kind except a band aid is so blatantly symbolic it's embarrassing. There's a sink right there in the bathroom when she's looking at it getting worse and worse, like three times. She doesn't clean it like every single person on the planet would do. If she cleaned it, and called someone after being bitten by an animal, like ALMOST everyone would do (it's a law to report animal bites where I live, and I suspect probably everywhere in the US), there would be no metaphor. Hence the metaphor is manufactured on the writer's refusal to be in any way realistic about what humans would do after a bite. And when it's difficult to get past this sophomoric metaphor, and there is weak character development, you don't feel much at the end. I didn't feel much at the end. See more Read all reviews
