Critics Consensus

It's good to see Dwayne Johnson back in full-throttle action mode, but Faster doesn't deliver enough of the high-octane thrills promised by its title.

Movie Info

After 10 years in prison, Driver (Dwayne Johnson) has a singular focus - to avenge the murder of his brother during the botched bank robbery that led to his imprisonment. Now a free man with a deadly to-do list in hand, he's finally on his mission...but with two men on his trail - a veteran cop (Billy Bob Thornton) just days from retirement, and a young egocentric hitman (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) with a flair for the art of killing and a newfound worthy opponent. The hunter is also the hunted. It's a do or die race to the list's finish as the mystery surrounding his brother's murder deepens, and new details emerge along the way hinting that Driver's list may be incomplete. -- (C) CBS Films

I genuinely did not think I would like Faster as much as I did. To be fair, I didn't think I would like it at all, but even so. This might actually be my favourite Dwayne Johnson role. It's almost entirely physical, which suits him very well, but the rare moments when it's not just that he nails too.

Exciting and fast-paced, Faster is a high-octane thriller. The story follows a recently released convict who's on a mission to kill the gang that set him up and murdered his brother. Dwayne Johnson leads the cast and gives a strong performance. And the supporting cast is also pretty good, and includes Billy Bob Thornton and Carla Gugino. Additionally, the action scenes are incredibly intense and gritty. But, the plot's a little weak and underdeveloped; using a lot of the typical clichés of a revenge film. Still, while it's a bit formulaic, Faster uses that to its advantage so that it can get straight to the hard hitting action.

One of the most driven, determined revenge movies I couldn't take my eyes off. I could totally smell what the rock was cookin

"Faster" starts with The Driver(Dwayne Johnson) being released from prison after ten years. Directly afterwards, he goes to a junk yard where he gets some smoking hot new wheels that include information and directions that lead him to calmly killing a telemarketer in Bakersfield which I am sure is not the outside help the warden(Tom Berenger) was hoping he would ask for. Detective Cicero(Carla Gugino) is none too happy to also have a burnt out detective(Billy Bob Thornton) ten days short of his retirement on the case. Approaching it from a completely different angle is a hired killer(Oliver Jackson-Cohen) who is also seeking professional advice on his relationship with his girlfriend Lily(Maggie Grace). To be honest, "Faster" is the movie "Drive" could have been.(Is it so wrong to prefer a well-crafted car chase to some random ultraviolence?) It is not just that "Faster" is a fine example of lean, mean, stylish, well-photographed and violent filmmaking that makes up for some of the story's implausibilities. With a tip of the hat to Sergio Leone(notice the killer's dial tone), the movie gets unexpectedly deep in its exploration of revenge, just as lines blur between the roles the characters play. And it is interesting how the movie plays with time, especially with the climactic sequence in an anachronistic setting. The driver lives in the past, the detective in the present while the killer is looking towards the future, just as he is desperately trying to escape his past.
