Oscar® winner Michel Hazanavicius' remake of Shin'ichirô Ueda's cult hit One Cut of the Dead follows a director (Romain Duris, L'Auberge Espagnole) charged with making a live, single-take, low-budget zombie flick in which the cast and crew, one by one, actually turn into zombies. Featuring hysterically unhinged performances from Oscar® nominee Bérénice Bejo (The Artist), Matilda Lutz (Revenge), and Finnegan Oldfield (Corsage), Final Cut is a sly love letter to the art of filmmaking and a blood-soaked, hilarious genre farce with a meta-to-the-max premise.

Critics Consensus

Although it'll be more satisfying to viewers who haven't already seen the original, Final Cut offers playfully entertaining meta commentary on the art of the remake.

Sergio Burstein Los Angeles Times 10/05/2023
In the end, even though it may seem unbelievable, the film takes a humanistic and affectionate turn which radically contrasts with the start of the film, and that additionally, connects to The Artist. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

It's very short, socially conscious and all about the movie industry. Go to Full Review

It’s a fast, not as cheap, and much better than decent cover version of another song, one that knows very well that it’s a cover version. Go to Full Review

At its best, the film’s willingness to acknowledge the challenges of remaking a beloved original empowers its strongest moments. At its worst, these choices only highlight the ways in which the film pales when compared to its predecessor. Go to Full Review

It’s fun but isn’t fresh in the slightest, which feels like a missed opportunity... If you want an innovative, meta zombie comedy that celebrates filmmaking, you should probably check out One Cut of the Dead. Go to Full Review

If you've never seen the original, Final Cut offers up all the same bonkers twists, surprisingly multilayered performances and eruptions of myriad bodily fluids. Go to Full Review

Kyle M @RT77296778 Oct 10 Though refreshingly funny and suitably unique for French cinema, the remake of something genius doesn’t add anything new when merely translating and scouting elsewhere albeit retaining the fun enjoyment. (B) See more Daniel G @RT52559946 07/22/2023 Very pleasant, as long as you are patient enough to get through the beginning and can figure out that in French, 'prenoms' are not pronouns but proper names and that is why the French actors are called Akira, etc. It's a joke. Some of the jokes don't really hit for me, like the diarrhea stuff, but it was a human movie on a human scale. See more Peter W @RT12077588 03/29/2023 Overall, if you're a lover of all things relating to cinema and horror, this comes highly recommended. While a wacky and comedic feature, I was impressed by how smart and clever this film was, especially with its reveals by the third act. The film begins with a bang, hooking audiences in early, and while there isn't much back story here, there's enough. Even if things don't make sense initially, it's impossible to look away from everything occurring. Despite a slow second act, the investment pays off and feels deeply rewarding for viewers. I found this French remake of the Japanese horror comedy Cut of the Dead (which I haven't seen yet!) highly enjoyable, delightful and entertaining. See more Mount T @RT72015456 03/24/2023 Funny remake of Final Cut of the dead. Didn't see the original, but had an excellent time watching this one. See more Clayton B. P @RT70732396 02/21/2023 I cant remember a movie where there was almost constant laughing in the theater. The humour really worked out for me and apparently the other people as well. There were some unnecessary scenes but all in all I loved the experience.
