Foxtrot (2018)

Critic Consensus: Foxtrot uses topical themes to deliver a bruising sociopolitical statement that's equally effective taken simply as an absorbing, well-acted drama.

Movie Info

Michael and Dafna experience gut-wrenching grief when army officials show up at their home to announce the death of their son Jonathan. Michael becomes increasingly frustrated by overzealous mourning relatives and well-meaning army bureaucrats. While his sedated wife rests, Michael spirals into a whirlwind of anger only to experience one of life's unfathomable twists - a twist that can only be rivaled by the surreal military experiences of his son.

Like a self-inflicted wound, it leaves a mark.

The best thing to be said of this well-intentioned film is that it doesn't resort to lecturing.

Apr 6, 2018 | Rating: 1/5 | Full Review…

"Foxtrot" is far too interior to be called flashy, but there's something striking in director Samuel Maoz's visual confidence, the way he translates his characters' states of mind into images.

Apr 5, 2018 | Rating: 3.5/5 | Full Review…

A despairing work that's not quite as gripping as its predecessor, "Foxtrot" still manages to make a powerful statement about the unintended side effects of living in a constant state of war.

Apr 4, 2018 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

Particularly impressive is Ashkenazi, who brings to Michael a soulful but volatile insecurity. It's a hauntingly realized performance.

Mar 29, 2018 | Rating: 3.5/4 | Full Review…

Maoz is a director of gallows humor and creamy visual control, and the movie at times dances along the edge of magical realism only to pull the characters and the audience back with a jolt.
