Movie Info

From the Rough, starring Academy Award nominees Taraji P. Henson and Michael Clarke Duncan and Tom Felton, is the inspirational true story of Catana Starks from historically black university Tennessee State, who became the first African-American woman ever to coach an all-men's team at the collegiate level. Through grit and determination, she overcame incredible odds and deep-seated prejudice from all corners to guide a rag-tag group of golfers to an all-time record championship season. Henson nicely captures Starks' determination but also her doubts and personal demons.

Solid sports tale has positive messages, feel-good themes.

Henson's performance goes a long way toward selling the uniqueness and importance of Starks and her story--which Bagley almost appears determined to flatten out in the most cookie-cutter-familiar way possible.

A well-deserved, if syrupy sweet, overdue tribute to an African-American role model and trailblazer.

Audience Reviews for From The Rough

This film earned a 5 because ... -I LOVE an inspiring sports film... -Tom Felton (aka Draco Malfoy from Harry Potter fame) FINALLY plays a good guy AND falls for a brown girl... -Justin Chon (from Twilight and Green Dragons fame) plays a role I've never seen him play before well again.... -it's MCD's last role -AND ultimately, I was left inspired and feeling on my summer break I'll watch this film again tomorrow.
