Chris H @RT60525826 Jan 4 Not a pleasant watch - in fact, sometimes unnecessarily bleak and hopeless - but deep, rich and brilliant nonetheless. Caine plays a seedy criminal seeking knowledge and revenge, motivated by his own sense of honour but with little regard for anyone else. He is mostly impassive, but betrays extreme emotion occasionally. There are great supporting turns from, among others, Alun Armstrong and Bryan Mosley, very familiar faces to watchers of BBC television. The plot is complicated and you need to keep your ears open, but it's worth it. There are some great lines (my favourite goes something like "you don't give a man like Jack a drink in a little glass like that, give him the bottle", which is an allusion to something else) and the camera work and the music are very effective too. Having seen this version, I'm interested to check out the Stallone one. I have a feeling I'll like the newer one more, just on the basis of improvements over the years when it comes to filmmaking - editing, acting, cinematography, etc. Also, I had trouble taking Michael Caine seriously as a menacing mob enforcer and apparent ladies' man. I swear, it felt like I was watching a James Bond film with how much action he got in here. This was based on a book that came out in the 60s, I believe. It captures the grimy northern England of the early 1970s right down to the disgusting wallpaper and window treatments. Following Alfie and The Italian Job, Get Carter further solidified proof that Michael Caine is an able actor. Be sure to 'drink up' this uncomfortable yet gripping motion picture. Stay at the very least for Britt Ekland's scene where she demonstrates her talents and a flair for the phone sex business.
