Girl Most Likely

Girl Most Likely (2013)

Critic Consensus: Largely witless and disappointingly dull, Girl Most Likely strands the gifted Kristen Wiig in a blandly hollow foray into scattershot sitcom territory.

Movie Info

Kristen Wiig stars as Imogene, once a promising young New York playwright whose promise has fizzled, thanks to a crisis of confidence. Heavily in denial about being dumped by her society boyfriend, Imogene uses her skill for drama to stage an elaborate fake suicide as an appeal for his sympathy. But her attempt backfires when she's put into the custody of Zelda, her estranged gambling addict mother (Annette Bening), and must return home with her to the Jersey shore. Desperate to get back to her Manhattan circle of so- called friends, Imogene must finally deal with her family, including her unique brother (Christopher Fitzgerald), Zelda's new boyfriend The Bousche (Matt Dillon), plus a cute young lodger (Darren Criss),who together help Imogene sort out her place in the world. Berman and Pulcini -- American Splendor, The Nanny Diaries -- found a tone somewhere between tragedy and nonsense.

There are moments to make you honestly wish it were a better movie, and that the semi-autobiographical screenplay by Michelle Morgan didn't feel so much like a first draft.

The rustle of producers' notes and test-screening cards gradually drowns out anything amusing.

Kristen Wiig's comic artistry and its melodramatic tinge are squandered in this frenetic, schematic comedy, which also lays waste to a fertile premise.

Nobody in this movie is really appealing enough to be much fun. The state of New Jersey should sue.

Audience Reviews for Girl Most Likely

Very slow and not overly funny. It did have its moments, though. I liked Annette Benning as the cougar mother and the 90's tribute band bit gave me a laugh. I could have done without the weird brother and it felt like the movie could happily have been 20 minutes shorter than it was. Okay to watch, but not a must see by any stretch.

I normally like the self growth/self realization type of movie, but there is not much of either in this film.

"Girl Most Likely" is an indie comedy about a former playwright who is having problems in her life, and has to be saved by a neglectful mother, a reserved brother, and two strange men who each have their own quirks. The supporting characters are designed to be idiosyncratic sidekicks, and in that way they in themselves are entertaining and unique, but Imogene (Wiig) is not. For being the main focus of the plot, Imogene is all over the place, and unless you can align yourself with someone selfish going through the process of becoming a more realized person, you will not enjoy the character. She is selfish, popularity obsessed, needy, and awkward, and degrades everyone she loves in order to feel better about herself. It's less a film about realizing the errors of your own ways and more so about simply realizing happiness, and that's such a boring topic for a film. Definitely interesting for many reasons, this film still underwhelms in many areas.

She has a lot to live up to. And a few things to live down. Not bad movie! Girl Most Likely is full of potential and just like it's heroin, a lot is expected from it. It's a great set up with an amazing cast but where it has all those strengths- it's weaknesses are equal if not stronger. This is a low budget independent comedy that has a quirky tone to it. There may be a bit too much going on in this film. A subplot of Imogene trying to find her biological father doesn't do too much to move the story along. The ending also goes way over the top. But ultimately, Kristin Wiig makes Imogene a flawed yet lovable character who we root for. Kristen Wiig stars as Imogene, a failed New York playwright awkwardly navigating the transition from Next Big Thing to Last Year's News. After both her career and relationship hit the skids, she's forced to make the humiliating move back home to New Jersey with her eccentric mother and younger brother (Annette Bening and Christopher Fitzgerald). Adding further insult to injury, there's a strange man sleeping in her old bedroom (Darren Criss) and an even stranger man sleeping in her mother's bed (Matt Dillon). Through it all, Imogene eventually realizes that as part of her rebuilding process she must finally come to love and accept both her family and her Jersey roots if she's ever going to be stable enough to get the hell away from them.
