John J Aug 17 This movie is, objectively, quite bad. The camera work is quite amateurish. Zero special effects. The plot is simply and puerile. There is so little story to develop that the film is only 45 minutes long. Nonetheless, there is something endearing about the film to me. Maybe my feelings are biased because I watched this film when it came out in the 1980s with my young children, who were captivated by it. So nostalgia is playing a role here. I doubt that children today would be satisfied with this low-budget, effects-free film where not much happens. The narration by Orson Wells is, of course, excellent. He is the only big-name person in the film. I also liked the performance of Jack Mauck as Mike, The Overseer. Mike is a Tom Bombadil-type character (maybe even consciously modeled after Tom Bombadil) who communes with all of the living creatures in the forest. He is not as powerful as Tom Bombadil (who is?) but still demonstrates a love for nature that cannot be underestimated. See more Read all reviews
