Movie Info

HE NAMED ME MALALA is an intimate portrait of Malala Yousafzai, who was wounded when Taliban gunmen opened fire on her and her friends' school bus in Pakistan's Swat Valley. The then 15-year-old teenager, who had been targeted for speaking out on behalf of girls' education in her region of Swat Valley in Pakistan, was shot in the head, sparking international media outrage. An educational activist in Pakistan, Yousafzai has since emerged as a leading campaigner for the rights of children worldwide and in December 2014, became the youngest-ever Nobel Peace Prize Laureate. It's a shame that Guggenheim's slickly produced documentary examines such an important and fascinating story with such underwhelming results.

The result is a film more educational than engrossing; high schoolers should see it - the rest of us, maybe not.

While Malala's saintly status is front and center, there are lingering, disquieting and incomplete issues all over the place.

The chief draw here, of course, is Malala herself: an irrepressible, earnest voice for the oppressed.

The film is worthy, obviously, and it forces us to think about the prices paid by our unexpected heroes.

Audience Reviews for He Named Me Malala

The five stars are for Malala! Hopefully she will continue the work to bring education to all the girls in the world who are currently deprived of it.

Created for educational purposes this may inspire lots of ordinary kids around the world to stand up for their rights and show the adults how it's done. For the cameras, Malala refused to waste any time capitalising on her own suffering. Animation is used to tone down the violent past that shaped her family's activism at Pakistan's Swat Valley. Teachers should take note this comes with free curriculum and discussion guides for your classrooms available online. It is not Davis Guggenheim's best work but he understands Malala's voice is something we desperately need right now and his track record with highest-grossing documentaries has certainly helped getting the message out there.

The inspirational story of Malala has touched the hearts of many and it's without a doubt, about time someone made a documentary about it. He Named Me Malala addresses all the important aspects of her strength in overcoming her struggle and striving to reach her achievements and spread knowledge around the world.
