Critics Consensus

Intoxicating in style but saddled with pacing that feels like purgatory, Her Private Hell is a take-it-or-leave-it proposition from Nicolas Winding Refn that the unconverted will happily decline.

Refn seems to believe that he's sharing a meaningful vision, though what that might actually be is anyone’s guess. Go to Full Review

This is a highly personal, annoyingly silly film that is a gorgeous slog. I would rather stare at a single frame of Her Private Hell for 109 minutes than sit through the actual movie for its full runtime again. Go to Full Review

If you try to take these characters and situations literally, Her Private Hell is tough sledding; if you start looking at them as free-floating genre signifiers, the film becomes considerably more absorbing. Go to Full Review

It’s supposed to be ludicrously campy yet dourly self-serious. It’s supposed to be ambiguous to the point of near incoherence. But it’s surely not meant to be so f**king boring. Go to Full Review

The production design, the fashion, the makeup, the hair, all of the visuals are great. But it is also a disjointed affair and ultimately not as arresting and captivating as i wanted it to be. Go to Full Review

...this is primo Refn, its fugue-like pacing and dark-side-of-Hollywood plot providing plenty of scope for swirling visions of madness and twisted scenes of mayhem. Go to Full Review

Matt Aug 6 If you like NWR, you’ll want to see this! The Neon Demon meets Only God Forgives, with a healthy dollop of cyberpunk as well as post-WWII Japan vibes.
