This is a highly personal, annoyingly silly film that is a gorgeous slog. I would rather stare at a single frame of Her Private Hell for 109 minutes than sit through the actual movie for its full runtime again.

If you try to take these characters and situations literally, Her Private Hell is tough sledding; if you start looking at them as free-floating genre signifiers, the film becomes considerably more absorbing.

If you like NWR, you’ll want to see this! The Neon Demon meets Only God Forgives, with a healthy dollop of cyberpunk as well as post-WWII Japan vibes.

A tough movie to recommend to general audience but IYKYK NWR it’s an imaginative narrative, stunning world building, atmospheric, metaphor driven, thread of hero path, pepper in Argento and Lynch, no answers but the clues are all there.
