[A] provocative query into what makes life worth living.
This is bleak material, but also a compelling human story with just the right amount of soapy melodrama lurking beneath its frosty surface.
Sahlstrom's hero is unlikeable, his heroine unconfident. His film is neither and it is a strikingly well-researched debut which nonetheless hits some predictable beats.
Unfortunately, the story doesn't venture quite far enough in pursuit of the extremes it promises or in the illumination of its main characters' curious psychological depths.
