Movie Info

An intense personal drama documenting a young woman's choices in modern day Iran, Rasul Sadrameli's Man, taraneh, panzdah sal daram (aka I'm Taraneh, 15) finds a young woman in the difficult situation of becoming a single mother. Her widowed father serving time in jail, fifteen-year-old Taraneh (Taraneh Alidoosti) avoids the unwanted advances of carpet salesman Amir until the suitor's mother convinces the young girl to accept his offer of marriage. Quickly realizing that their marriage is doomed due to their deep-rooted incompatibility, the couple agrees to divorce and Amir emigrates to Germany. Discovering that she is pregnant shortly thereafter, Taraneh makes the difficult decision to keep the baby despite the increasingly intense social pressure mounting against her bold decision. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Critic Reviews for I'm Taraneh, 15

All Critics (6) | Top Critics (6)

A strong entry in the recent plethora of Iranian neo-realist films.

January 11, 2006

Sadr-Ameli opts for a tone of distanced objectivity, where melodramatic revelations are slow-pedaled; his documentary background is evident in the detailed portrait of institutional sexism and an even-handed struggle with the ethics of abortion.

January 10, 2006

This Iranian film quietly observes the title character's transformation from naïve schoolgirl to wary but proud single mother.

January 10, 2006 | Rating: 3.5/5

In its quiet way, Taraneh touches the hot issues -- jail, divorce, teenage love, unwed maternity -- and comes up with a convincing, positive answer to all.

Taraneh is superbly played by same-named Taraneh Alidousti, whose angelic face is made for the movie camera.

January 10, 2006 | Rating: 3.5/4

Sadr-Ameli's unflagging empathy and Alidousti's confident performance keep us rooting for this young heroine, who refuses to accept the limits forced upon her by both society and the law.
