Chad H. @ASOIrishWoody Dec 8 47 Meters Down is the story of two sisters who say, “Let’s go on a relaxing beach vacation!” and immediately follow it with, “Let’s get into a rusty shark cage run by the sketchiest company since Fyre Festival.” Because nothing says “therapy appointment incoming” like trusting your life to a boat Captain who looks like he Googled “how to shark cage” that morning. The film stars Mandy Moore as Lisa, a woman who is both afraid of sharks and desperate to impress her ex—so naturally, she decides the best way to do that is to dangle herself in the middle of a shark buffet. Her sister Kate, the chaos goblin of the movie, is the one who says, “C’mon, it’ll be fun!” which is always the phrase spoken right before things explode, sink, or get eaten. Once they’re dropped into the water, the cage snaps faster than a cheap selfie stick, and they plummet 47 meters down—hence the title, in case you were hoping it was a romantic comedy. Down there, it’s dark. It’s scary. The oxygen is running low. And the sharks are basically underwater linebackers with anger issues. The entire movie becomes the most stressful game of “don’t die” ever filmed. Here are the film’s main lessons: Never trust a vacation idea that starts with “It’ll be safe!” Sharks are always hungry. Even when you’re not on the menu, they’ll consider an exception. If your oxygen tank says ‘low,’ that’s not a suggestion. Sisters will get you into terrible situations AND try to get you out… usually. The movie does an excellent job of creating tension. Every shadow looks like a shark. Every sound feels like a shark. And the twist ending? Oh, the twist. See more e l Jul 21 So, the dialogue is not great, and the sibling relationship between the sisters is super simplistic. But it is clear that the sisters do love each other, which is part of what matters in the film. However, it is not believable that Kate would want Lisa to accept so much risk just to get back at the boyfriend who dumped her...so why does this matter? It doesn't really. The point is, although the setup is ridiculous, although clearly no sister would act like this, and no one would participate in a sport where you have to take a ridiculous risk in a ridiculously flimsy cage...the sisters do clearly love each other...and that's why this movie is good in spite of the ridiculous aspects. You do feel, on several occasions, that they honestly want the other sister to thrive, and both the sisters leave the safety of the cage to help the other sister. So, this is why this movie works, in spite of the ridiculousness. The suspense is good, the photography is good, each harrowing situation is well designed. It's overall a well-made movie, and you are not expected to expect good dialogue...because it's a horror movie about two girls and many sharks. It's very good for what it is. The ending is horrible but it's a better ending than what Lisa thinks happens. So, although the ending is nasty (hint: it's a horror film), it is an appropriate ending for a movie of this genre. See more Milo Jun 13 It's not the best movie, believe me, I know that. It's alright if you're just trying to put something on in the background and want something a little scary. The realism is.. lacking, to say the least. Aside from the scuba-related accuracies (or lack thereof), I'm more upset with how sharks are portrayed in this? Sharks rarely attack people for food, unless they're incredibly starved. The most a shark will do is bite to understand what they're interacting with. It's not like they have hands, after all. To think a shark would vindictively hunt humans down like this is laughable, especially considering they're not even bleeding.
