There's something unconvincing about the whole enterprise.
Negga's lead performance is strong, but the film's deliberately slow pacing and dour tone make the film a hard sit ...
Beautiful, savage and beguiling describes both the island and the central protagonist (stunning performance by Ruth Negga) of this film by writer/director Scott Graham.
It's beautiful and there are enough small moments in Iona that compensate for the lack of a cohesive, especially interesting, narrative.
Led by the wonderfully watchable Negga, the ensemble acting is stunningly good in a dark film that takes it time in revealing its themes -- guilt, faith, sin, forgiveness.
Scott Graham's confident drama features a strong central performance and a believably bleak sense of place, but it's almost comically taciturn in places, its secrets unravelling slowly amid an atmosphere of quiet trauma.
A spiritual search for forgiveness in an increasingly secular world ends up a disjointed and frustratingly incoherent film.
Iona has also been shorn of at least 25 minutes since it fi rst saw the light of day last year - and I'm not convinced it is better for it.
Flawed but atmospheric ...
Melancholy characters shine in this powerful portrait of island life.
The scenery is striking, and Negga is impressive as a woman who is haunted by events from her past. Regrettably, though, the film itself isn't worthy of such praise.
It's a striking piece, and director of photography Yoliswa von Dallwitz evocatively captures the exposed, untamed island landscape.
