Filmmaker Hannah (Olivia Colman) takes her trans nonbinary teenager Frances (Aud Mason-Hyde) to Amsterdam, to visit their gay grandfather--lovingly known as "Jimpa" (John Lithgow). But Frances' desire to stay with Jimpa for a year abroad means Hannah is forced to reconsider her beliefs about parenting, and the stories she has long told about her family. Funny, accessible, full of sadness and joy, and with a wonderful multi-generational cast, JIMPA celebrates LGBTQ+ culture across three generations: Grandfather Jim faces the challenges of aging as a gay man in a generation that never expected to grow old; teenager Frances grapples with the disappointment of their heroes falling short of their ideals; and mother Hannah navigates the differing perspectives of her father and of her child. Surrounding these three is a vibrant family--the family they were born into and the family they continue to create.

Critics Consensus

Olivia Coleman and John Lithgow turn in wonderful performances but this overly sentimental attempt at pathos often overstays its welcome.

Queer people want more from their rep than being anthropologically observed from the sidelines, and straight people have watched enough 'Drag Race’ to already be familiar with the concepts this film treats as novel. Go to Full Review

If only the film didn't ask the audience to invest in so very many subplots; the clutter ends up sucking the air out of all of them. Go to Full Review

John Lithgow is simply divine in this coming of age story where three generations in the same family all come of their respective ages. Go to Full Review

Grief is something we all have to work through at some time or another—and if you haven’t had that experience yet you surely will. Jimpa made me miss my own grandfather, and I can’t wait to see what Hyde and Mason-Hyde do next. Go to Full Review
