One of Carpenter's sillier efforts, which isn't a problem per say but this feels a little lazy at times. Tension and originality get sacrificed for straightforward B movie luridness. If Carptenter made this before he had a string of flops and disappointments he might have been a little more daring.

So many weird cinematic choices are made here, a subpar Souther Gothic. But if you want to show someone what "cool" looked like in Texas in the mid-to-late 90's, you can show them the opening scene of this film.

Lots of gore, no plot. Vampires is a western horror that started off well but then went down hill as soon as the team finished executing a bunch of Mexican vampires. it's somewhat fun to watch but it doesn't make much sense overall.

John Carpenter delivers a bold new vision of the undead in his action/horror film Vampires. The story follows a pair of vampire slayers that go rogue in order to pursue a master vampire named Valek, who they believe to be the original source of vampirism. James Woods leads the cast, which also includes Sheryl Lee and Daniel Baldwin. However, the characters aren't written very well and the performances bear that out. But the vampire lore of the film is quite interesting and keeps the film engaging. So while the story isn't that compelling, the action and mythology keeps Vampires entertaining.
