After destroying a vampire nest in rural New Mexico, Team Crow is savagely ambushed during the victory celebration by the unholy Valek, a vicious 600-year-old vampire. • So, John Carpenter's Vampires stinks, and "Paul Tatara's Review of John Carpenter's Vampires" won't be a review so much as it'll be a check list for posturing teenage boys.

  • Vampires is unmistakably the work of Carpenter, full of gory action and gruff characters.

  • The picture isn't anything special, but by the standards of late-career Carpenter, it'll have to do.

  • Vampires is a mixed bag. It's clear that John Carpenter is still having fun whilst making this movie. And John Carpenter having fun is something the world generally benefits from.

  • This is Carpenter in prime form. Easily his most violent film, it features iconoclast heroes with a streak of misogyny and unrepentant machismo, which provides a perverse comic book irony. These guys are emissaries of the Vatican...

  • A suspense-free snark-fest desperate to turn its protagonist - vampire slayer Jack Crow (James Woods) - into a Snake Plisskin-style icon of supernatural-badass cool.

So many weird cinematic choices are made here, a subpar Souther Gothic. But if you want to show someone what "cool" looked like in Texas in the mid-to-late 90's, you can show them the opening scene of this film.

Lots of gore, no plot. Vampires is a western horror that started off well but then went down hill as soon as the team finished executing a bunch of Mexican vampires. it's somewhat fun to watch but it doesn't make much sense overall.

John Carpenter delivers a bold new vision of the undead in his action/horror film Vampires. The story follows a pair of vampire slayers that go rogue in order to pursue a master vampire named Valek, who they believe to be the original source of vampirism. James Woods leads the cast, which also includes Sheryl Lee and Daniel Baldwin. However, the characters aren't written very well and the performances bear that out. But the vampire lore of the film is quite interesting and keeps the film engaging. So while the story isn't that compelling, the action and mythology keeps Vampires entertaining.

Pretty cool. I"m not a fan of James Woods personally, but he did a really good job in this. Very entertaining, but I still enjoyed Los Muertos (the sequel starring Bon Jovi) better.
