Aided by Oplev's commendably gentle direction of his excellent young leads, Speed Walking is most notable for its delicately candid depiction of the earliest, most malleable stage of teen sexuality.
Oplev is perfectly in tune with the script's tender tone, deftly guiding the believable cast through the film's frequent emotional twists and turns.
The movie is so laden with period kitsch that it feels like a spoof.
Teenage years are defined by a search to define your true identity, and there is no shortage of films about this - when coupled with a story about the messiness of grief, Oplev's film becomes far more original than it appears on the outside.
