Movie Info

The first fiction feature by Tizza Covi & Rainer Frimmel (whose earlier documentary films will be screening as well), La Pivellina focuses on the relationship between two-year-old Asia, and Patti, a circus woman living with her husband Walter in a trailer park on the outskirts of Rome, who finds Asia abandoned in a park. With the help of Tairo, a teenager who lives with his grandmother nearby, Patti starts to search for the girl's mother, while caring for her in the meantime. La Pivellina is a film about a cosmos of outcasts in present-day Italy: a moving tale of courage and discrimination, of loss and togetherness, a look behind the corrugated-ironfence of a gated community. -- (C) Forum

Though at times too determined to avoid dramatic highs and lows, "Little Girl" strikes gold in the casting of the 2-year-old Asia Crippa.

Covi and Frimmel work their neorealistic magic, turning what might have been a sappy maternal-awakening melodrama into a simplistic, genuinely sweet tribute to motherhood, Italian style.

Scenes showing the tricky process of acclimatizing a child to new surroundings, and the patchwork of experiences that make up an education -- both Asia's and Tairo's -- are grounded by entirely affectless performances, not least that of little Asia Crippa.

Seems to owe much of its aesthetic approach to the Dardenne brothers, while using it for decidedly non-Dardennian purposes.
