A sweetly observed if not especially incisive documentary.
A documentary that offers some fascinating if glancing insights into a rich and timely subject but ends up being more frustrating than enlightening.
What's memorable here is the students' talk of their families' economic anxieties, of their hopes to make enough money while young that their own children will feel financially secure, of the ways that American and Chinese life diverge.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for a sequel.
Wang's verite approach attempts to strike a tone somewhere between revealing and contemplative, but her principal subjects are too young and inexperienced with the world to have much of import to say.
Maineland is, however, very much worth seeing because it does give us a portrait of two teens who share more with their American counterparts than they or we imagine.
A myopic culture clash/culture shock story that fails to show us either.
It runs too long, and music often drowns out valuable information. But Stella and Harry are wonderfully intriguing leads and watching them grow more confident, learn what they want and then achieve such is heartfelt enough that it is worth your time.
This is not a film replete with big revelations, but it effectively draws out the details that unsettle and give the migratory experience its power.
Wang packs a lot of information - three years! - into this brief, but sharply observed little jewel, and all of it of consequence to the world today.
It's sadly telling that after spending a semester in America the kids all go home fat.
Maineland serves to remind audiences of the power, and beauty, in differences.
