Anjum K 12/09/2020 A powerful art movie imbibed with unabashed realism about vibrant social issues. See more 01/20/2017 Produced by 500,000 farmers of Gujarat, Manthan is based on Amul founder Verghese Kurien's initial attempts to establish a co-operative milk society in a Gujarati village. His efforts, however, are resented by the local dairy owner who has monopolized the buying of milk in the district (at throwaway rates) and by the sarpanch who's against giving equal status to the harijans in the co-operative society. Brilliantly acted and directed, the film effectively showcases how difficult it is to change the status quo in a deeply hierarchical society like India, even if it is something as innocuous and beneficial as a co-operative dairy.
