The film doesn't overcomplicate its premise and delivers plenty of suspenseful shark encounters, large-scale destruction, and crowd-pleasing action. Once the Megalodon arrives, the movie moves quickly and rarely becomes boring. Jason Statham brings exactly the right blend of toughness, charisma, and self-awareness to the lead role. Li Bingbing provides a likable counterpart, while Rainn Wilson adds some entertaining energy as the story's wealthy sponsor. The biggest weakness is that much of the human drama feels generic and predictable. Few characters outside the core cast receive much development, and the story never becomes as exciting as its premise suggests it should be. Still, the action is easy to follow, the shark attacks are entertaining, and the film delivers enough creature-feature fun to satisfy viewers looking for a straightforward summer monster movie.
