Movie Info

Inspired by the acclaimed book by Naomi Oreskes and Erik Conway, Merchants of Doubt takes audiences on a satirically comedic, yet illuminating ride into the heart of conjuring American spin. Filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the curtain on a secretive group of highly charismatic, silver-tongued pundits-for-hire who present themselves in the media as scientific authorities - yet have the contrary aim of spreading maximum confusion about well-studied public threats ranging from toxic chemicals to pharmaceuticals to climate change. A movie about manufactured consensus would be a vital public service. But "Merchants of Doubt" isn't quite that movie.

Aside from an eye-opening investigation of useless and harmful flame repellents pumped into furniture, it sticks to climate change without broadening its scope to other examples of corporate spinning, which must be plentiful.

A compelling exposé of professional propagandists, though the movie itself is not agenda-free.

Audience Reviews for Merchants Of Doubt

½

A scathing look at the power of the lobbying industry in the United States. It effectively links the history of lobbyists with the global warming political screen. This is a documentary that all high school students should see.

Should be required viewing for every American. Some good details on what is driving the money from guys like the Koch brothers. Intriguing insight into the way big business attacks scientific facts for their benefit and drive the message. Probably not going to shock you as much as wake you up to some facts that you already are aware of but are not front and center in the media.

7/7/15 M-Go Scary, moving, intelligent and unbiased. This show how big tobacco not only spent years killing people but laid the PR groundwork for every other corporation who had something dire to hide in the name of profits. It is amazing that people will sell their soul to perpetuate not good science but good politics, at least as their keepers see it. Exxon, Koch Brothers and a host of other super rich people and companies continue to put our lives at risk in the name of profits. Don't miss this one.
