So sad, because Mohalla Assi had such potential. It could have been a cautionary film of its time, and for its time.
I call it an "anti-movie" because there is virtually nothing about Dwivedi's film adaptation that adds to the viewer's perception of text and subtext.
This is an old film, mired in court cases and released almost four years after it was made. But in its treatment and style, it feels even more dated and obsolete.
Mohalla Assi feels disjointed, weak and washed out despite its compelling tale.
Mohalla Assi's heavy-handed approach is its biggest problem.
Always dull despite the vibrancy of the city in which it plays out, Mohalla Assi tries to gain an edge by courting controversy.
