  • Moody, elegantly disturbing and impeccably made by a master director, this story of blurred identities and casual immorality in German-occupied Paris benefits from what might be the best performance of star Alain Delon's long career...

  • Both a work of history, unstinting in its concrete depiction of political hatred and fear, and a portrait of the metaphysics of tyranny-a classic of doppelgänger paranoia that gathers the theme on a single string and pulls it into modernity.

  • The miracle of the film is that Losey had the imaginative guts to probe his own fears and failings.

The topic of identity is very difficult to explore. Obsession is another tough challenge to adapt. Merge them together and add Delon's most complex performance. A thorough character study with undertones of social critique ensues, arguably Losey's definitive triumph in cinema. 93/100

What is in a name? This question has profound implications during an anti-Semitic regime. The surname is a precursor to identity: Klein implies French Catholicism or Dutch Jewish ancestry. Seeking to correct a simple case of mistaken identity becomes a Kafkaesque journey. Exploration of the doppelganger is rarely more personal. A well-scripted, riveting intellectual thriller.
