Movie Info

When a creepy older man named Leland Gaunt (Max von Sydow) moves to a small town in Maine and sets up an antique shop, bad things soon follow. Gaunt has the remarkable ability of selling people exactly what they want most, but his ideal purchases come at a price that involves more than just money. Through Gaunt's manipulation, the citizens of the town gradually turn on one another, resulting in violence that Sheriff Alan Pangborn (Ed Harris) struggles to contain.

The film is okay and passes the time without being the typical Stephen King adaptation around this time. The main issue I had was the pacing and overall storyline arc. They don't make too much of the characters and it's only the interactions with the villainous new store owner that shows us anything. The film is deeply flawed, but the cast is incredible and you might find yourself liking this more than it deserves, you're not alone. I had expected this to be a complete dud, but it was interesting. I'm now eager to see if they release the longer version on video. This would be interesting to see as a longer version due to the cast and subplots. Ed Harris has a showy confrontation at the conclusion, but he is not the central figure and in that sense, is wasted. 20/10/2019

Not one of the better Stephen King adaptations, Needful Things doesnâ(TM)t have a compelling script, characters, or mood. It has the vibe of a TV movie, with unconvincing melodrama. There is some good work to be had, especially from Ed Harris, but most of the characters lack any depth. Far from being scary, Needful Things succeeds mostly at being bland and predictable.

'Needful Things' is my least favourite King novel - if you like reading a 700-page book about pranks then it may be for you. Moreover, there's nothing to be done with the source material except hire the greatest actor ever, Max Von Sydow, as the antagonist. And when boring pranks and Sydow's brilliant performance are the only two things running the show we get one depressing movie about nothing so - considering it was directed by gun-holding douche-bag Charlton Heston's son - just bow everything up. Terrible film. Max Von Sydow: amazing. Such a shame.
