06/17/2012 It's almost excruciatingly uncomfortable and embarrassing watching (and hearing) the overbearing Mayor's ham-handed efforts to push socially awkward, desperately lonely, and perpetually single citizens into child-bearing relationships. He seems to approach governing as if he rules over a feudal village. Now it would be nice if these people found companions, but putting them in a room and (figuratively) shoving them at each other for the express purpose of mating only serves to humiliate the ones who were pressured to attend and frustrate and infuriate the ones who thought they might actually, finally, "get lucky." There's a feeling that desperation and even violence simmer inside some of these people and that the Mayor's clumsy and aggressive poking and prodding may one day provoke a response he and the community are unprepared for. There's humor in the film, but not humor that feels good. See more Read all reviews
