Marco L @decatur555 Aug 23 Patria. No man's land deserves some credit for recreating 1914 on an extraordinarily small budget. The uniforms, weapons, trenches and period detail show genuine dedication, and its true story about Dutch-linked volunteers joining the French Foreign Legion could have produced a fascinating examination of identity and patriotism. Unfortunately, almost everything dramatic fails. The performances are painfully stiff, the dialogue constantly sounds written rather than spoken, and the direction rarely creates convincing emotion or danger. Even material drawn from Arthur Knaap’s real letters feels strangely lifeless. The central contradiction —what "homeland" means to people with complex national identities who choose to fight for another country— is far more interesting than the screenplay built around it. An admirable production effort, perhaps, but admiration for the effort cannot turn it into a good film. See more Read all reviews
